📊 Our Methodology

The VPN Index aggregates results from our free VPN leak test tool. Each test checks for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks independently. Results are logged anonymously - we record only the verdict (pass, warn, or fail), browser, operating system, device type, and country (derived from the VPN exit node, not the user's real location).

🌐 What is an IP Leak?

An IP leak occurs when your real IP address is visible to websites despite being connected to a VPN. This can happen when the VPN tunnel drops momentarily, when IPv6 traffic bypasses the VPN, or when certain protocols fall back to a direct connection. An IP leak completely defeats the purpose of using a VPN for anonymity.

🔍 What is a DNS Leak?

A DNS leak happens when your DNS queries - the requests that translate domain names like "example.com" into IP addresses - are sent to your ISP's DNS servers instead of through the VPN tunnel. Even if your IP is hidden, DNS leaks reveal every website you visit to your internet provider. This is one of the most common and overlooked VPN vulnerabilities.

📡 What is a WebRTC Leak?

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is a browser technology used for video calls, file sharing, and peer-to-peer connections. By design, WebRTC can discover your local and public IP addresses - even when you're using a VPN. Most browsers have WebRTC enabled by default, making this a particularly common leak vector that requires browser-level mitigation.

🔬 How Our Data Differs from Lab Tests

Most VPN review sites test a handful of providers in controlled lab environments. Our data is different: it reflects real-world conditions from thousands of anonymous visitors using diverse networks, devices, and configurations. This means our results capture issues that lab tests miss - misconfigured clients, network-level interference, browser extensions that break VPN tunnels, and edge cases that only appear at scale. The trade-off is that our sample is self-selected (visitors who choose to test), so it may not represent all VPN users.
